Trash Compactor Metal Gearbox Assembly

The outer casing measures 5 inches in width and 7 inches in height. Replace this part if the trash compactor stops moving or produces a grinding noise.

This OEM gearbox is compatible with GE products, including Hotpoint, General Electric, and Sears-Kenmore. The gearbox is crucial for turning the gears in the trash compactor, enabling it to function properly. If the compactor malfunctions, it may be time to replace the gearbox. Fortunately, the repair process is straightforward.

To replace the gearbox, begin by unplugging the compactor and pulling it away from the wall. Press the foot pedal and pull the container drawer assembly forward, lifting it off the track. Remove the screws securing the mounting brackets and top panel. Slide the top panel back and lift it off. Carefully set the compactor on its side and remove the screws securing the bottom panel. Take off the panel and rotate the large drive gear counterclockwise to disengage the ram from the power screws. Return the compactor to its upright position. Tape the directional switch lever away from the ram. Lift the ram out and remove the power screw shields. Take out the ram stops and washers. Install the new gearbox assembly and reassemble the compactor by following the previous steps in reverse order.
